Allina Medical Clinic–Cottage Grove Offers Digital Mammography
COTTAGE GROVE, MINN. 10/16/2009--Allina Medical Clinic–Cottage Grove is pleased to announce that it will expand its health and wellness services for women with the addition of digital mammography in November.
“Digital mammography is an innovative tool that improves our diagnostic assessments and enables us to provide our patients with exceptional quality and comprehensive care in the prevention of breast cancer,” said Naomi Tetzlaff, MD, lead physician at Allina Medical Clinic–Cottage Grove. “We’re pleased that our patients can benefit from of this new service in a comfortable, compassionate setting, close to home.”
Digital mammography is state-of-the-art technology for breast cancer detection and offers patients several advantages over traditional film-based exams, including enhanced image quality, shorter wait times for results, and reduced radiation exposure. Like a traditional mammography, it uses X-rays to generate images of the breast. Instead of using film to record the image, though, a digital mammogram converts the X-ray energy into a digital image. The resulting images are immediately available for diagnosis.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. One in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in their life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman's survival. Detected early, the five-year breast cancer survival rate is 97 percent.
“Digital mammography is a win-win for patients and radiologists,” said Michael Plunkett, MD, radiologist, Consulting Radiologists, Ltd. “Patients appreciate the speed and efficiency of obtaining their mammogram. Radiologists appreciate the ability to manipulate the acquired digital information in a variety of ways. The digital mammography also provides increased image contrast that helps us do a better job of detecting breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue.”
Allina Medical Clinic–Cottage Grove is committed to the fight against breast cancer. If you would like to schedule a mammogram or have questions about this important breast health procedure, please call 651-458-1884.
