Owatonna Hospital completes historic move with successful patient relocation

OWATONNA, Minn. 10/16/2009--The new Owatonna Hospital, part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, officially opened today, completing the final phase of its historic move with the successful relocation of 14 inpatients to the new hospital. In addition, three new patients were admitted.

Gold Cross ambulances

Three Gold Cross ambulances prepare for the safe relocation of patients from the 903 S. Oak Avenue facility to the new Owatonna Hospital, part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, located at 2250 NW 26th NW and adjacent to I-35.

The first patient was transported from the 903 South Oak Avenue facility to the new replacement hospital at 7:30 a.m. Patients continued to be transferred over the next several hours with all patients settled comfortably in their beds at the new hospital by 2 p.m. Owatonna Hospital’s moving day involved a team of more than a hundred nurses, administrators, Allina staff, other hospital staff and emergency medical services personnel from Gold Cross.

More than five ambulances from Owatonna, Mankato and Austin were involved in transporting patients about four miles to the new hospital on 26th NW Street, adjacent to Interstate 35 South.

"The success of this complex patient move is a testament to the dedication of teams of hundreds who have been planning and preparing for this day for more than two years," said David Albrecht, president, Owatonna Hospital. "The new Owatonna Hospital is now officially open and we can continue building on our legacy as a hospital of the 21st century."

The new $51 million hospital includes a two-story, 38-bed hospital, located on 20 acres and physically connected to the Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System, whose physicians practice at the hospital. Nearly all of the inpatient rooms are private, with comfortable sleeping spaces for companions and wireless Internet access. The new hospital, designed with input from nurses, staff, physicians, patients and families, features an environment that enhances healing and an environmentally-sustainable design.

"In addition to using recycled building materials and energy efficient systems, we tried to bring the outside environment into the building using natural light, and the exterior landscape provides a park-like setting of green space, trees and plantings," said Albrecht.

The first floor includes a Community Resource Center, Professional Intercollegiate Education Center, Pink Pantry, Coffee & Gift Shoppe, Reflection Center, Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute – Owatonna, the Emergency Department and an Allina Community Pharmacy. Surgery, minimally invasive procedure rooms, the Birth Center, Medical-Surgical Unit and the Special Care Unit are on the second floor.
