Free cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema forum at United Hospital

ST. PAUL, Minn. 10/16/2008--Cancer survival rates are steadily increasing, but many cancer survivors develop side effects that can be improved by rehabilitation. Cancer survivors who receive rehabilitation can achieve optimal performance and well-being in spite of the effects of cancer and cancer treatment.

One of the conditions associated with cancer is lymphedema. It is a serious health problem that is under-recognized and therefore under treated because of lack of awareness and information.

Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute presents Cancer Rehabilitation and Lymphedema, a community forum Thursday, October 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at United Hospital, 333 North Smith Avenue in St. Paul. Registration and refreshments begin at 6 p.m. in the John Nassef Medical Center Conference Hall.

Nancy Hutchison, MD, will discuss how cancer rehabilitation can improve ones quality of life. Dr. Hutchison is the medical director for Cancer Rehabilitation and Lymphedema at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. She is also a certified lymphedema therapist and a board member of the Lymphology Association of North America.

Carmela Claypool will provide an overview of what lymphedema is, who's at risk, prevention and treatment. Claypool is a physical therapist and nationally certified lymphedema therapist.

This free event is open to the general public and health professionals. Registration is required by calling 612-863-4155.
