St. Francis Regional Medical Center Named Level III Trauma Center
SHAKOPEE, Minn. 07/03/2008--St. Francis Regional Medical Center (SFMRC) has been designated a Level III Trauma Center by the Minnesota Statewide Trauma System of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). SFMRC joins Unity Hospital as the second Allina hospital to receive this designation, ensuring St. Francis has the expertise and resources to provide quality care to severely injured patients.
In it’s report recommending designation, reviewers commented on the tremendous progress of the trauma program at St. Francis in only a few short months, seeing definite strengths in the support offered by administration and a well laid out facility that complements the flow of trauma patients from the emergency room to radiology and medical imaging to the intensive care unit and to the operating suites. In addition, they cited a very strong outreach program that included educational feedback to the EMS providers and injury prevention.
In 2006, the St. Francis Emergency Department treated 25,000 patients. Of these, 121 patients met MDH criteria for trauma. The trauma volume is expected to increase significantly as the Scott/Carver County areas continue to grow by almost 1000 new residents monthly.
At St. Francis, the emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with board certified emergency medicine physicians. There are trauma transfer agreements in place with all three metro Level I trauma centers. Trauma data is collected and entered into a registry database for quality improvement and injury prevention initiatives.
