Allina Hospitals & Clinics to close Sartell surgery center
SARTELL, Minn. 12/22/2008--Allina Hospitals & Clinics is closing the Center for Outpatient Surgery at Abbott Northwestern's Sartell Outpatient Center.
Employees learned Friday that the surgery center will close on January 23, 2009. The closing affects 22 employees, including 10 nurses.
"We are thankful to the people in this community who have supported us during the past seven years," said Jeff Peterson, Abbott Northwestern's president. "We will continue to care for St. Cloud-area residents at Abbott Northwestern's main campus in Minneapolis."
The surgery center provides staff and facilities for general, orthopedic, ear nose and throat, eye, and urologic surgeries; endoscopic procedures and pain management injections.
Allina officials say the economy and changes in healthcare reimbursement are the reasons for the closing. When the outpatient center opened in 2001, the hospital sponsored a range of services – surgery, imaging, laboratory services, physical therapy, specialty physician practices and a primary care clinic.
While the surgery center's closing virtually eliminates Abbott Northwestern's presence in the Sartell Outpatient Center, the building is still open. Central Minnesota Surgeons, spine surgeons, orthopedists and children's heart doctors continue to practice there.
