Grand Opening of Saint Paul Cancer Center Features St. Paul Mayor Coleman

ST. PAUL 04/22/2009--The new Saint Paul Cancer Center, a joint venture of Allina Hospitals & Clinics’ United Hospital and Minnesota Oncology, will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 5 p.m. with St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony.

About The Saint Paul Cancer Center

The new Saint Paul Cancer Center is a joint venture of Allina Hospitals & Clinics’ United Hospital and Minnesota Oncology. The two organizations have come together to build St. Paul’s only comprehensive, integrated cancer center, meaning that essentially all the outpatient cancer care a patient might need is provided at a single location: medical oncology consultation, infusion therapy (chemotherapy), laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy and pharmacy.

The center will comprise the entire first floor of the Ritchie Medical Building, 20,000 square feet, across from United Hospital. It will house eight physicians and 46 professional and support staff. Together with United Hospital’s surgical facilities, the new center completes a total cancer care environment.

About the Partnership

United Hospital and Minnesota Oncology have long shared a close working relationship. The opening of the new center is the fruits of a partnership announced in 2006 with the goal of creating the Saint Paul Cancer Center.

“At Minnesota Oncology, we believe the best model for the delivery of cancer care involves integrating all the specialists necessary to provide that care in one place to facilitate cooperation and coordination to meet the patients' needs,” Thomas P. Flynn, MD,  President of Minnesota Oncology. “Working with United Hospital in the development of this facility we have been able to create a place where that coordinated cancer care can be provided at the highest quality to the patients we serve in a convenient, easily accessible manner."

By co-locating services and sharing technology at a single, convenient location, Minnesota Oncology and United Hospital can meet the needs of patients and families in a cost effective way without duplicating services. Each organization can draw on their own expertise and resources to contribute to an optimal model of care for people in our community who are facing a diagnosis of cancer.

“Our partnership with Minnesota Oncology is one more way we are living our mission to provide the communities we serve with exceptional care,” said United Hospital President Tomi Ryba. “Bringing together our two exceptional teams in one location is the right thing to do for our patients so we can make good on our promise of exceptional care.”

In addition to clinical services, patient support is provided with the on-site presence of a social worker, nutrition therapist, patient navigator, patient financial counselor, as well as services from the American Cancer Society including regularly-held “Look Good-Feel Better” classes.
