Advanced Robotic Surgery

da Vinci System

Robotic surgery at River Falls Area Hospital provides an alternative to conventional procedures. Surgeons are able to perform an array of procedures using the da Vinci robot, including thoracic, gynecologic, urologic, and general surgery procedures.

Minimally invasive robotic surgery offers patients benefits over conventional surgery. Some of these benefits include less blood loss, less pain and small incisions.

The da Vinci® robot integrates 3D high definition endoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the surgical field. The system is the first da Vinci® in service in the region to offer unparalleled 3D HD visualization, with a panoramic 16:9 aspect ratio.

"The da Vinci® System is an exciting addition for the River Falls Area Hospital's surgery program. The robotic surgery system provides surgeons greater than twice the viewing resolution and 20 percent more viewing area," said Kevin Hallman, MD, medical director, Robotics Program, River Falls Area Hospital.

"This means improved clarity and detail of tissue planes and anatomy — critical when performing delicate dissection or in reconstructive procedures. In our experience, this has meant a better operation for the patient with reduced complications, hospital stays and recovery time."

Seated only a few feet away from the operating table, surgeons view the patient's anatomy through a screen that produces a 3-D image magnified ten times. The robot that operates on the patient is controlled by an expert surgeon who carefully maneuvers a pair of knobs.

On the patient's end, the robot's arms are fitted with five to eight millimeter surgical instruments and a small camera scope that provides a detailed view of the patient.

Benefits

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain and scarring
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities
